John Terry Reveals Chelsea’s Secret Advantage Over Bolton in 2005
Former Chelsea captain John Terry has shared a remarkable story regarding a strategic advantage the team gained in 2005, when manager José Mourinho obtained footage of Bolton Wanderers’ training session.
In a recent interview with talkSPORT, Terry recalled that former Bolton manager Sam Allardyce was seen instructing his players on how to exploit weaknesses in Chelsea defender William Gallas. The training video reportedly featured Allardyce urging his squad to target Gallas, suggesting that Mourinho analyzed the footage to prepare for their upcoming match.
Terry recounted, “We were watching a video, and suddenly Sam Allardyce appeared in Bolton’s training, saying: hit Gallas, he’s not good in the air. It was astonishing to see someone get footage from another team’s training ground. I still don’t know where Mourinho got it.”
Chelsea went on to defeat Bolton 5-1 in that league match, a victory that contributed to their successful Premier League campaign.
In the interview, Terry also reflected on Mourinho’s departure from the club in 2007, expressing regret over his role in the manager’s exit. “I would leave that pitch in a coffin for him,” he said, discussing the emotional impact on the team. “Grown men were in tears, not really understanding why. I still feel kind of responsible for that… It’s just disappointing how it all ended.”
Mourinho left Stamford Bridge following a falling out with then-club owner Roman Abramovich but returned in 2013 after his tenure at Real Madrid. His second spell with Chelsea lasted two and a half seasons before he was dismissed in 2015.
