Vance Supports U.S.-Iran Agreement as Washington Lifts Naval Blockade, Iran Celebrates Gains

Published June 19, 2026

United States Vice President JD Vance has postponed a planned trip to Switzerland intended to commence a new round of peace negotiations with Iran following the signing of a memorandum of understanding aimed at concluding hostilities, according to the White House.

Earlier, Vance defended the agreement between Washington and Tehran, despite criticism from U.S. officials and Israel, stating that the MoU initiates a 60-day period for formal negotiations leading to a comprehensive deal.

The planned departure for Switzerland, originally scheduled for Thursday night, was canceled due to Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon that reportedly resulted in three fatalities.

Iran’s semi-official news agency, Tasnim, noted that Iranian negotiators had not confirmed their participation in the upcoming talks, pending evidence of compliance with the interim agreement that also covers Lebanon within the ceasefire framework.

The agreement, signed by the leaders of both countries, is viewed as a pivotal step toward resolving a prolonged conflict. However, critics have voiced concerns regarding its stipulations, unanswered questions, and Tehran’s reliability.

Developments in Lebanon

  • Israeli Attacks: Recent Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed at least three individuals, according to Lebanese state media. Reports indicated that a drone attack near Kfar Tebnit claimed two lives, while another attack in Zabadin caused further casualties. Hezbollah stated it successfully repelled a four-day Israeli offensive and is under increasing pressure to reduce military activity in line with the new terms.

Developments in Iran

  • U.S. Lifts Naval Blockade: The U.S. military announced the termination of its naval blockade on Iranian ports as part of the peace agreement. U.S. Central Command confirmed that all enforcement actions have ceased, allowing unrestricted maritime traffic. However, U.S. naval vessels will remain in the region to ensure compliance with the agreement.

  • Iran Celebrates Military Gains: Mohsen Rezaei, an adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, claimed a “victory” in the conflict, asserting that Iran has diminished its adversaries’ power. In a statement on social media, he characterized the conflict as a significant historical event, while simultaneously mourning the loss of key military leaders.

  • Warning Against U.S. Violations: Chief negotiator and parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf emphasized that Iran would respond severely to any infringement of the memorandum by the United States. He cautioned that any perceived “bad faith” from Washington would lead to serious consequences.

Developments in the U.S.

  • Criticism from Senate Democrats: Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized former President Donald Trump over the agreement, asserting that it harms U.S. interests. Schumer dismissed claims that Democrats would support any funding for Iran, specifically denying allegations of a $300 billion reconstruction package.

  • Defense from Trump Administration: The Trump administration has faced scrutiny from both sides of the aisle, with some arguing that Tehran has received excessive concessions. Officials, however, have defended the MoU, asserting it aligns with U.S. interests and emphasizes Iranian compliance.

  • Warning to Israel: Vice President Vance addressed Israeli officials, underscoring the necessity for Israel to adhere to the ceasefire terms concerning Lebanon. This directive has prompted pushback from some pro-Israel lawmakers, yet the administration maintains its stance.

Developments in Israel

  • Strained U.S.-Israel Relations: Political analysts suggest a significant rift between President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the agreement. Amid pre-election tensions, Netanyahu appears concerned about the implications of the deal for his political future. Observers noted that Trump’s authority over the negotiations is influencing the landscape of Israeli politics as elections approach.
