Kane and Haaland Anticipate World Cup Quarterfinal Clash
MIAMI — England captain Harry Kane has described Norway’s Erling Haaland as “a machine,” while emphasizing that the two strikers have distinct playing styles ahead of their upcoming match in the World Cup quarterfinal.
“We’re completely different players. I know we’re both strikers, but we’re in almost two different positions,” Kane said during a pre-match news conference on Friday.
Haaland has made a significant impact at the tournament, scoring seven goals in his first four matches, including a crucial double that eliminated Brazil. This achievement has propelled Norway to the quarterfinals for the first time in their history.
Kane trails Haaland by just one goal in the tournament and has now tallied 14 goals in his World Cup career. “Erling is incredible. His goalscoring record speaks for itself,” Kane acknowledged. “I see myself as a different player, although I score similar goals. I prefer to touch the ball more and engage in the play, while still being able to fulfill the role of an out-and-out number nine.”
Kane expressed respect for Haaland and is hopeful for a quieter performance from him during their match on Saturday. “He’s a fantastic player,” Kane added.
Despite their remarkable scoring abilities, both strikers lag behind Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, who have each netted eight goals in the current tournament. Kane, who won the Golden Boot in 2018, has reiterated that his primary goal is to help lead England to a World Cup victory.
“This World Cup has been amazing for strikers,” said Kane, who plays for Bayern Munich. “I want to focus on winning the tournament rather than another Golden Boot, but scoring goals is important for the team’s success.”
Kane called for a combined effort from his teammates as they prepare for a challenging eight-day stretch that could determine their fate. “Until we win that trophy, there will always be discussions about England and the team,” he said. “We’re in a good position now, one we aimed for during our prep camp six weeks ago.”
Meanwhile, Norway coach Stale Solbakken commented on the significance of the matchup between Haaland and Kane. “It’s Norway versus England, but it’s no secret that Kane is the key player for England and Haaland is ours,” he stated at his pre-match press conference.
Norway has made an impressive return to major international competition after a 26-year absence, exceeding expectations with a standout victory against Brazil in the round of 16. “Every game is crucial for Norwegian football, especially in the knockout rounds,” Solbakken noted.
He added that while England may face greater pressure, his team is also focused on their performance. As the tournament has progressed, Norway’s success has galvanized support both domestically and among expatriates in the United States, with the Viking row celebration becoming a memorable aspect of their campaign.
“The whole of Norway is looking forward to this match. We’ve had great moments in this World Cup, and it unites the country,” Solbakken remarked. “This might be a rare opportunity for us, but I believe we will qualify for future tournaments.”
The match between England and Norway is set to take place in Miami on July 11, 2026.
