Lagos: Contractor dies in underwater accident at Egbin power facility

Investigation Underway Following Contractor’s Death at Egbin Power Plc
LAGOS, Nigeria — Egbin Power Plc has initiated an investigation into the death of a contractor who died during an industrial accident while conducting underwater maintenance at the facility. The incident occurred on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, and was confirmed by the company’s management in a statement to the press on Thursday.
The accident prompted a partial shutdown of operations at the plant, leading to a temporary disconnection from the national power grid. As a result, the power plant reported zero megawatt generation on both Wednesday and Thursday.
Sources indicate that the deceased, a diver responsible for maintenance work in the plant’s lagoon-based pump house, was performing tasks in the water system when an unexpected pump activation trapped him in the impeller, resulting in fatal injuries.
In the aftermath, operations in the affected area were immediately halted as safety protocols were enacted. This action contributed to the overall shutdown of the plant while investigations commenced.
Egbin Power Plc, which is Nigeria’s largest power generation facility with a capacity of 1,320 megawatts, expressed its condolences to the contractor’s family and colleagues. The company stated that it activated emergency response measures and informed relevant authorities promptly.
In its statement, Egbin Power Plc extended “deep sorrow” over the loss, expressing its commitment to the health and safety of all personnel and contractors. The company is cooperating with law enforcement agencies as part of the ongoing investigation and conducting a thorough review of the incident.
DAILY POST reports that the plant’s shutdown has caused power disruptions in parts of the electricity network, affecting supply to several locations connected to Egbin Power Plc.
