Man throws down two children from three-storey building in Aba, victims hospitalized

Man Throws Children from Third Floor in Umuobe Community Incident
UMUOBE, Nigeria — A man in his forties reportedly threw two of his children from a three-story building in the Umuobe community, near Aba Main Town, under circumstances that remain unclear.
Witnesses stated that the man subsequently jumped from the same height after allegedly threatening his wife. The two children, despite being thrown from the top floor, survived but sustained various injuries.
Neighbors, drawn by the children’s cries, rushed to the scene to provide assistance and transported the injured children to a local hospital. The community members then contacted the Nigerian Police Force.
Authorities responded promptly, arriving at the scene where they apprehended the father and took him to a different hospital from the one treating his children.
Residents in the area speculated about the possible reasons behind the man’s actions, with some suggesting drug use while others speculated about mental health issues or possible possession by an evil spirit.
The Abia State Police Command confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway.
Police Public Relations Officer DSP Maureen Chinaka reported that the incident occurred on Thursday, July 30, 2026, around 6:00 p.m.
“We received a report that a young man threw his two children from the third floor of a storey building and then jumped himself,” Chinaka said. “The children are currently in one hospital, while the man is in another. Investigation is ongoing.”
