Eight Killed in Early Morning Attack in Plateau State
Riyom, Plateau State – Eight individuals were killed and one person injured in a shooting on Sunday morning when suspected Fulani bandits attacked the Kum community in the Riyom Local Government Area.
The attack occurred around 12:30 a.m., with assailants opening fire on residents before fleeing the scene. This information was reported by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency and security analyst focused on the Lake Chad region.
Security forces from Sector 6 of Operation Enduring Peace responded to a distress call from the community. Upon arrival, they discovered the eight deceased and one survivor who had sustained gunshot wounds. The injured individual was promptly transported to the General Hospital in Riyom for medical treatment, while the bodies of the victims were retrieved from the site.
Makama reported that following the incident, troops launched offensive operations in the vicinity, including nearby communities and surrounding forests, in an effort to locate the attackers. Additional personnel have been deployed to the area, and ongoing clearance operations aim to prevent further assaults and provide reassurance to residents.
This incident follows a pattern of security challenges in Plateau State, with previous reports of violence in the Riyom, Bokkos, and Mangu local government areas. Security forces have intensified intelligence-led patrols and surveillance in affected regions as they continue their efforts to track down those responsible for the attack.
