Nigerian Army Reports Surrender of Militants in Southeast
The Nigerian Army announced on Sunday that militants in the Southeast region have surrendered their arms in response to ongoing military operations by the 82 Division/Joint Task Force South East, known as Operation UDO KA, OPUK.
In a statement shared on its verified X account, the Army reported that intelligence-led operations led to the recovery of various weapons, including an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
The statement emphasized that these recent achievements demonstrate the effectiveness of an integrated approach combining both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies aimed at dismantling criminal networks and promoting peace and security in the region.
This development follows sustained operational pressure from the 34 Artillery Brigade and the recent detainment of suspects connected to the murder of a soldier. The Army stated that members of a militant group operating in the Egbema area have begun to surrender voluntarily due to the intensified military offensive.
One suspect reportedly guided security forces to the location of weapons concealed by the group, leading to the recovery of several firearms. According to the Army, items recovered include one AK-47 rifle, two magazines, 54 rounds of 7.62 mm Special ammunition, and four locally fabricated firearms.
Additionally, troops from Sector 5 OPUK conducted a follow-up operation based on credible intelligence, which resulted in the recovery of two General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs), 45 rounds of 7.62 mm x 51 ammunition, and another IED. These efforts are part of ongoing initiatives to reduce threats to public safety and security in the region.
