Security Forces Recover Armored Personnel Carrier in Zamfara State
ZAMFARA, Nigeria — Security forces recovered an armored personnel carrier (APC) containing motorcycles from suspected bandits during a counter-ambush operation, which officials claim resulted in the deaths of more than 100 militants.
The operation took place in Zamfara State, where the APC was transported to Gummi town following the encounter. The details were shared by journalist Bakatsine, who specializes in conflict reporting in Nigeria’s North-West, in a post on X on Thursday.
Bakatsine indicated that the APC, reportedly used to transport motorcycles, was seized during the clash with armed groups. Accompanying video footage showed the APC’s arrival in Gummi, with several motorcycles visible inside.
This development unfolded shortly after security forces successfully rescued Aliyu Mohammed, an official with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who had been abducted by heavily armed bandits. These criminals reportedly attacked communities in Talata Mafara, rustling hundreds of cattle and taking Mohammed captive after he delivered examination materials to Sokoto.
Officials confirmed that both Mohammed’s Toyota Hilux and the examination papers were ultimately recovered without damage.
Police operatives from the Victim and Crime Response Unit (VCRU), in collaboration with the military, pursued the bandits to Gando Forest. There, they engaged the attackers, safely rescuing Mohammed and another victim, while also recovering hundreds of stolen cattle.
