Nigerian Navy Hosts Sports Fiesta for 70th Anniversary

WARRI, Delta State—The Nigerian Navy Ship DELTA held an inter-agency sports festival on Tuesday to celebrate the Navy’s 70th anniversary. The event took place at the NNS DELTA Football Field, featuring mixed volleyball matches with personnel from various security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Police Force, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

A novelty football match was also organized, involving male and female children from local communities. All participants received sports kits, plaques, and other awards for their involvement.

Commodore Shehu M. Tasiu, Commander of NNS DELTA, emphasized that the sports event was intended to not only mark the Navy’s milestone, but also to promote physical health, teamwork, and unity among the agencies and local residents.

“Sport is more than competition; it serves as an essential component for physical fitness and mental well-being, especially for children. It builds healthy hearts, sharp minds, and discipline,” Tasiu stated.

The Commander highlighted the importance of engaging children in the celebration as a means to inspire future generations and strengthen connections between the Navy and nearby communities. “When children participate alongside our officers, they view us not just as uniformed personnel, but as mentors and friends,” he said.

Tasiu urged Nigerians to incorporate regular physical activity into their lives, citing its benefits in preventing illness and reducing stress.

Engr. Ezekiel Atoke, Special Guest of Honour and representative of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), praised the Navy for fostering unity and healthy living through sports. He noted that such endeavors are crucial for social cohesion and youth development.

“The Nigerian Navy deserves commendation for bringing together community members and various security agencies. This event promotes values that are essential for nation-building,” Atoke remarked.

Participants from different agencies expressed support for the initiative, describing it as a means of enhancing collaboration among security personnel. Stanley Bobby, the coach of Living Boot FC, lauded the event for fostering community spirit. “It’s commendable because it promotes friendship, discipline, and healthy living among participants,” he said.

Frank Okoro, coach of Red Ichofe Warriors FC, emphasized the role of sports in youth development and integration, commending the organized nature of the event.

ASP Cyril Ibeah of the NDLEA noted that the competition further solidified relationships among various security agencies. “Such activities enhance teamwork and mutual understanding, essential for our collective mission,” he stated.

Air Commodore Effiong Joseph of the Nigerian Air Force remarked that the event provided a valuable opportunity for recreation and inter-agency bonding. “The competition highlighted the spirit of unity among security agencies,” he said.

Participating personnel expressed satisfaction with the event. Lance Corporal Mercy Elawure described it as rewarding and enjoyable, while local children who took part in the football match shared their excitement. One participant, Efe, expressed gratitude, saying, “I am happy to play football with my friends today. Scoring a goal and receiving a sports kit made this one of my best days.”
