Navy Celebrates 70 Years of Service in Delta State

WARRI, Delta State — The Nigerian Navy Ship Delta marked its 70th anniversary with a ceremonial dinner attended by key military and government officials, showcasing the Navy’s recent achievements and community engagement efforts.

Captain Daniel Beecroft, Executive Officer of NNS Delta, credited the success of the Naval Base to the leadership of Commodore Shehu Mohammed Tasiu, who he described as a transformational leader. Beecroft praised Tasiu for his dedication to personnel welfare, infrastructure improvement, and community outreach.

“Tonight, I express special appreciation for our visionary leader, Commodore Shehu Mohammed Tasiu,” Beecroft said. He highlighted the historic dinner as a significant milestone for the Base, while noting Tasiu’s initiatives that have enhanced operational effectiveness.

Under Tasiu’s guidance, the anniversary celebrations extended beyond traditional events, directly benefiting local communities through various humanitarian programs. The NNS Delta conducted educational outreach at Ogiame Primary School, distributing over 1,200 notebooks, textbooks, and school supplies.

Additionally, a medical outreach in Ubeji Community provided free consultations, laboratory tests, and healthcare services to more than 1,000 residents. Support was also provided to the widows of fallen personnel, and sporting competitions were held to promote unity among youths and security agencies.

Beecroft announced several infrastructure projects completed during Tasiu’s command, including a modern transit accommodation facility, funded by Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited. He expressed gratitude to the Delta State Government for its ongoing support, particularly in relation to a critical foreshore wall project designed to protect the Base’s operational infrastructure.

Commodore Tasiu, addressing attendees, emphasized the importance of community-focused initiatives and expressed appreciation for partnerships with local authorities, including the Delta State Government represented by Dr. Kingsley Emu.

Tasiu further noted the educational outreach efforts at Obiyame Primary School and reiterated the Navy’s commitment to contributing to sustainable development through educational investments. He highlighted the medical outreach that delivered essential healthcare services in Ubeji.

The evening also included remarks from various speakers, including former Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Dan Preston Omatsola (Rtd), who underscored the role of the Armed Forces in national unity. Brigadier General Efe Dafioghor (Rtd) and Delta State Police Commissioner CP Yemi Oyeniyi spoke about the importance of collaboration among security agencies to ensure safety and stability.

At the conclusion of the events, speakers congratulated the Nigerian Navy on its 70 years of service and expressed confidence in its future contributions to national security and community development. The ceremonial dinner served as the culmination of weeks of activities dedicated to celebrating the Navy’s legacy and ongoing commitment to the nation.
