“Nigerians annoyed me” — Bimbo Akintola reveals why she supported Tinubu
Nollywood actress Bimbo Akintola has stated that her decision to publicly support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the recent presidential election was largely influenced by experiences of online bullying related to political opinions.
In an interview with media personality Chude, Akintola criticized the tendency among Nigerians to attack individuals based on their political choices. She specifically mentioned the treatment of veteran actress Joke Silva, who faced significant backlash for endorsing Tinubu, as a pivotal factor in her own public declaration of support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate.
“I supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the last election because Nigerians annoyed me with their bullying,” Akintola said. She reflected on the severity of the negativity directed at Silva, which prompted her to create a video affirming her own support for Tinubu amid the criticism.
“They bullied Aunty Joke to the point that someone wrote something that was so inhumane,” Akintola remarked. “So, I made a video and said, ‘I’m also supporting Tinubu; kill me, let me see if you can change my mind.’”
In her commentary, Akintola urged Nigerians to show respect for differing political opinions, emphasizing the importance of individual choice in democratic discourse. “Nigerians are annoying. Don’t bully other people. We have our rights to differences of opinion. You don’t like this man, cool, you have the right not to like him. You prefer this person, good for you. But don’t bully others,” she added.
