NMA Lagos condemns Abuja doctors’ meeting, declares it illegal

Lagos Medical Association Condemns Unauthorized Gathering of Doctors

The Lagos State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has denounced a meeting of medical practitioners held in Abuja on April 22, calling it unconstitutional and a potential threat to the unity of the organization.

In an official statement, the association asserted that the assembly was convened in violation of an earlier directive from the NMA’s National Officers Committee. It emphasized that the meeting lacked legitimacy within the established framework of the association.

The Lagos NMA warned that any resolutions or decisions made during the gathering would not be recognized, stating that such actions could jeopardize the constitutional integrity and operational stability of the association.

The statement criticized the conveners of the meeting for prioritizing personal ambitions over the collective well-being and professional interests of physicians, particularly at a time when initiatives to improve working conditions and pay continue.

Dr. Babajide Kehinde Saheed, the Chairman of the Lagos State chapter, described the meeting as “unconstitutional, illegal, reckless, and highly unprofessional.” He confirmed that it did not have the support of the state chapter.

“This unlawful assembly neither enjoys the support nor endorsement of NMA Lagos State. It represents a deliberate assault on the constitutional order, institutional integrity, and collective unity of the Nigerian Medical Association. Consequently, any decisions, resolutions, or pronouncements emanating from such an illegitimate gathering are null, void, and of no consequence whatsoever,” the statement read.

The association also expressed concerns that certain individuals appeared to be more focused on securing leadership positions within the NMA than on advocating for the professional advancement and welfare of its members.

“It is highly unfortunate that certain individuals seem more interested in the acquisition of political positions within the association than in the genuine welfare, professional dignity, and advancement of Nigerian doctors. Leadership within the NMA should not be diminished to a contest for personal ambition,” it added.
