No Confirmed Hantavirus Case In Nigeria – NCDC

Nigeria Reports No Confirmed Cases of Hantavirus
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed there are currently no reported cases of Hantavirus in Nigeria. This announcement follows recent international reports linking infections to cruise ship travel.
In a public health advisory issued via its official X account, the NCDC emphasized that the overall risk to the public remains low. The clarification comes amid concerns about a cluster of Hantavirus cases associated with multiple countries.
“At this time, there is no confirmed case of Hantavirus in Nigeria, and the overall risk to the public remains low,” the agency stated.
Hantaviruses are primarily transmitted by rodents and can infect humans through contact with the animals or exposure to their droppings, saliva, or urine. Symptoms of the virus may include fever, fatigue, body aches, headaches, gastrointestinal issues, and, in severe cases, respiratory difficulties.
To mitigate the risk of infection, the NCDC recommends that Nigerians maintain clean environments, prevent rodent infestations, store food securely, and dispose of waste safely. The agency also advises the public to minimize contact with rodents and their waste while practicing regular hand hygiene.
In addition, the NCDC is actively monitoring the situation and enhancing surveillance systems for emerging infectious diseases across the country. It encourages the public to rely on verified information from official health authorities and to avoid spreading misinformation.
