Abeokuta Resident Doctors Initiate Three-Day Strike Over Security Concerns
Abeokuta — Resident doctors at the Federal Medical Center (FMC) in Abeokuta initiated a three-day warning strike on Thursday in response to a recent security breach and theft incident at the facility.
The strike, which commenced on June 4, 2026, was announced by the President of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at FMC, Dr. Olanipekun Arise-Kola, during an emergency general meeting on Thursday.
In a communiqué issued following the meeting, which was also signed by Assistant General Secretary Olufemi Alawode, the doctors expressed their unanimous decision to withdraw their services temporarily. They cited persistent security lapses that threaten the safety and property of healthcare workers as their primary concern.
The group highlighted a recent incident at the House Officers’ Quarters, where items including five mobile phones, a laptop, cash, and a driver’s license were reported stolen.
“The Association of Resident Doctors FMC, Abeokuta wishes to formally bring to the attention of the Management the grave concerns of its members regarding the recent security breach and theft incident,” the communiqué stated.
The doctors emphasized that this incident intensified their ongoing apprehensions about inadequate security measures on the hospital premises.
During the emergency meeting, members expressed dissatisfaction with repeated security failures and the apparent lack of effective preventive measures. They called for immediate and satisfactory assurances from management regarding enhanced security measures.
The doctors’ demands include the replacement of all stolen items, the engagement of a more competent security service provider, and improved lighting around the hospital. Additional requests include the installation of functional CCTV cameras at strategic locations, deployment of armed security personnel to strengthen coverage, and establishing a police post staffed by active officers within or near the quarters.
While reaffirming their commitment to a cooperative relationship with hospital management, the Association stressed that the safety and security of healthcare workers must be prioritized. The strike is set to last until June 6, 2026.
