Ohanaeze rejects Peter Obi’s call for Tinubu’s resignation

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Criticizes Peter Obi’s Call for President Tinubu’s Resignation

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent Igbo socio-cultural organization, has condemned comments made by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in which he reportedly called for the resignation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This statement comes in the wake of recent political developments in the United Kingdom, including the resignation of Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

In a statement released Monday by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the factional Deputy President-General, along with Professor Chibuikeya Achoakawa, Ohanaeze Ndigbo emphasized that Obi’s comparison is misguided and politically inappropriate for Nigeria’s context.

While recognizing Obi’s constitutional right to express his views, the organization asserted that his remarks do not reflect the collective thoughts or strategic interests of the Igbo people or the Southeast region. As such, Ohanaeze Ndigbo officially distanced the Igbo nation from Obi’s calls for President Tinubu’s resignation.

The organization also acknowledged the ongoing federal initiatives aimed at enhancing national infrastructure, particularly in the Southeast. It praised the efforts of Minister of Works Engr. David Umahi, noting his significant contribution to federal road projects that have improved connectivity and boosted investor confidence in the region.

Ohanaeze expressed cautious optimism about several strategic infrastructure projects, including the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway and the Badagry–Sokoto Highway Corridor, emphasizing that sustained infrastructure investment is vital for national integration and regional equity.

Additionally, the organization highlighted positive developments in Nigeria’s external reserves, currently estimated at approximately $50.81 billion. These improvements, attributed to fiscal reforms and increased oil revenue, could strengthen macroeconomic stability and investor confidence if continued.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo also noted progress in security conditions across parts of the Southeast, which has facilitated increased commercial activity and a gradual return to normalcy. The organization urged continued federal collaboration with regional stakeholders to maintain peace and prevent any regression into insecurity.

In its concluding remarks, Ohanaeze Ndigbo reiterated the importance of responsible leadership and disciplined public discourse. It called on political figures to promote dialogue and prioritize national cohesion, while formally disassociating the Igbo nation from calls for President Tinubu’s resignation. The organization reaffirmed its support for ongoing federal infrastructure initiatives and commended efforts to improve Nigeria’s economic indicators and regional stability.
