Peller culture: ‘I said what I said’ – YCee responds to critics
Nigerian singer YCee has addressed backlash regarding his recent comments on the rise of what he termed “brain-rot” content in Nigeria, coining the phrase “olodo uprising.”
During a conversation on the subject, the artist referenced popular TikTok creator Peller as an example of this trend, which he claims sees audiences gravitating towards less intellectually stimulating entertainment at the expense of educational content. This mention sparked a variety of reactions, with some critics suggesting that YCee could have conveyed his point without naming Peller.
In a subsequent interview with Cool FM Lagos, YCee defended his remarks and stated he does not feel the need to apologize for his choice of example. He remarked, “Some people are saying I shouldn’t have called Peller’s name, but I said what I said. If you feel offended, you should check yourself. A lot of people are also taking what I said out of context. The olodo uprising is even worse than I thought because there are so many people coming out to defend it.”
YCee emphasized his call to those weary of what he deems unworthy content, asserting that “there is no reason why intelligent people cannot be streamers or content creators.”
