Peter Obi’s heart was never in ADC — Babachir Lawal

Former SGF Babachir Lawal Questions Peter Obi’s Commitment to ADC

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, expressed doubts regarding Peter Obi’s commitment to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) during an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday.

Lawal’s remarks follow Obi’s recent departure from the ADC, a move he made alongside fellow politician Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Both cited internal disputes and uncertainties about the party’s future as reasons for their exit.

“We never felt his heart was in it,” Lawal said regarding Obi’s involvement in the party. He noted that Obi joined the coalition after it had formed, indicating that he did not fully assimilate into the party’s structure.

According to Lawal, the ADC leadership attempted to integrate Obi by offering him the role of organizing secretary, which he described as crucial for a party’s electoral success. This gesture was meant to assure Obi of transparency within the party, but questions about his commitment remained.

Lawal also suggested that Obi’s departure could be related to his hesitance to engage in a competitive primary process. He emphasized the ADC’s dedication to providing a fair platform for all aspirants, highlighting that the party consists of individuals with diverse political ambitions.

Additionally, Lawal refuted the notion that his previous support for Obi in the 2023 presidential election indicated an ongoing political alignment. He clarified that their relationship at that time was based on shared goals, asserting that his political decisions are motivated by personal beliefs rather than allegiance to any individual.

This interview sheds light on the ongoing challenges within the ADC and the dynamics of political alliances in Nigeria.
