Scientists Track Rocket Debris Impact on Moon

A four-ton piece of debris from a SpaceX rocket has collided with the Moon, creating a new crater and offering scientists a valuable opportunity to study high-velocity cosmic impacts. The object, measuring approximately the size of a school bus, is the second stage of a Falcon 9 rocket launched in early 2025. It struck the lunar surface near the Einstein Crater early Wednesday, traveling at a speed of about 8,700 kilometers per hour (5,400 miles per hour). The impact released energy equivalent to roughly three tons of TNT.

Typically, such rocket components re-enter Earth’s atmosphere, either burning up or falling into remote ocean areas after completing their missions. However, over 18 months, gravitational forces from the Sun, Earth, and Moon altered the debris’s trajectory, resulting in an unintentional collision course. SpaceX stated that the path of the debris was unavoidable, given the vehicle’s remaining fuel reserves.

Julianna Scheiman, SpaceX director of NASA Science and Dragon Programs, commented, “What has happened is essentially a mixture of solar activity and gravity forces have put it on a path toward the Moon.”

In response to the impact, orbital observation spacecraft—including NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and South Korea’s Danuri—have calibrated their instruments to document the collision site. Although the immediate flash will not be visible during lunar daylight, the orbiters will assess the ejected dust plume and capture high-resolution images of the newly formed crater.

Space tracking expert Bill Gray noted the incident does not pose an immediate danger but raises concerns about the management of space debris. “It highlights a certain carelessness about how leftover space hardware is disposed of,” he stated, adding that the growing volume of debris is becoming an issue.

Wednesday’s event marks the second known instance of discarded rocket debris striking the Moon. The first occurred March 4, 2022, when a fragment of a Chinese Long March 3C rocket launched in 2014 impacted the lunar far side, causing an unusual double crater.
