Police arrest man for allegedly setting wife ablaze
KOGI STATE, Nigeria — The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Jacob Irewa for allegedly attempting to set his wife, Berida Irawo, on fire during a domestic dispute in Lokoja.
The police announced the arrest in a statement released Sunday by ASP Saliu Afusat, the Police Public Relations Officer. The incident reportedly took place around 8:30 p.m. on Friday at Oworo Estate in Felele, Lokoja.
According to the statement, officers from the B Division Surveillance Team responded after receiving reports of the incident and apprehended Irewa at the scene.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the altercation stemmed from Irawo’s decision to burn some of her husband’s clothing, which she believed he no longer used. In response to this, Irewa allegedly threatened his wife, obtained petrol from his motorcycle, and set her ablaze.
Irawo survived the attack and is currently receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital in Felele, Lokoja. The police reported that Irewa admitted to the act during preliminary questioning.
The police command has initiated a thorough investigation to establish the details surrounding the incident and to gather additional evidence. Commissioner of Police Naziru Bello Kankarofi condemned the act, reiterating the command’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy towards violence, particularly domestic violence.
He encouraged the public to settle domestic disputes through legal means and to avoid actions that could endanger lives. The police stated that Irewa would face charges in court upon the completion of the investigation.
