Bauchi State Police Arrest Three on Firearms Charges, One for Rape
Bauchi, Nigeria – The Bauchi State Police Command has apprehended three individuals in connection with alleged illegal possession and fabrication of firearms in the Misau Local Government Area.
In a separate case, the police detained a 26-year-old man, Lukman Alhaji Nasiru, for allegedly raping a 50-year-old woman with mental health challenges in the Gamawa Local Government Area.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Nafiu Habib announced the arrests in a statement released on Saturday, emphasizing the command’s commitment to combating illegal arms proliferation and sexual offenses within the state.
According to the statement, officers from the Misau Division intercepted Abubakar Ahmad, 30, on September 25 while he was reportedly in possession of a locally fabricated pistol that contained a live cartridge. Preliminary investigations indicated that Ahmad was trying to deliver the firearm to Tijjani Yakubu, 35, who is currently remanded at a correctional center on charges of criminal conspiracy, theft, and receiving stolen property.
During questioning, Yakubu allegedly claimed ownership of the pistol, stating that he had entrusted it to Ahmad for safekeeping. He further disclosed that he purchased the weapon from 48-year-old Bappah Kawu, a welder from Tashar Masu, Misau.
Kawu was subsequently arrested and reportedly acknowledged fabricating and selling the pistol to Yakubu for N30,000. A search of Kawu’s workshop yielded two additional locally fabricated dane guns and various tools allegedly used for firearm production, including a hacksaw, files, and long iron pipes.
All three suspects are currently in custody as the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Bauchi for further inquiry.
In an unrelated incident in Gamawa, police arrested Lukman Alhaji Nasiru after a report from the victim’s younger brother to the Gamawa Divisional Police Headquarters on September 25. The report stated that Nasiru lured the woman to the outskirts of Garin Malam on September 22, where he allegedly sexually assaulted her.
Following the report, both the suspect and the victim were taken to the General Hospital in Gamawa for medical examinations. The police indicated that investigations into the rape case are ongoing.
Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu has reiterated the command’s zero tolerance for illegal firearms possession and fabrication as well as sexual offenses, urging community members to provide credible information to assist police efforts.
