Jorge Jesus Defends Cristiano Ronaldo as Integral to Portugal’s National Team
LISBON, Portugal — Portugal’s head coach, Jorge Jesus, has defended Cristiano Ronaldo amid ongoing speculation about the veteran forward’s impact on the national team. In an interview with Canal 11, Jesus described the 41-year-old Ronaldo as a “symbol” of Portugal.
Jesus, who took over the national team on July 10 with a four-year contract aimed at guiding Portugal through their 2026 campaign, recently departed from Al-Nassr, where he helped Ronaldo secure his first Saudi Pro League title last season.
“He will never be a problem for the national team or for me,” Jesus stated. He acknowledged that opinions on the matter vary but emphasized the importance of communication, stating, “When the time comes to make a decision, I will talk one-on-one with Cristiano and with all the other players.”
Ronaldo, who celebrated his 41st birthday in February, faced criticism during the 2026 World Cup. Critics questioned his ability to lead Portugal’s attack, especially after the team was eliminated in the round of 16 by Spain, where Ronaldo scored only three goals in North America.
Before assuming the role of head coach, Jesus expressed his support for Ronaldo’s place on the team, noting that he would not hesitate to select the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star if he is performing at his best.
