Significant milestone – Ondo Catholic Diocese speaks after court verdict on Owo church massacre

Diocese Welcomes Court Ruling on 2022 Church Attack
The Catholic Diocese of Ondo has expressed approval of the Federal High Court’s recent judgment regarding the June 5, 2022, terrorist attack on St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo. The ruling has been framed as a significant step toward achieving justice and accountability.
In a statement released Thursday, Bishop Most Rev. Jude Ayodeji Arogundade noted that the decision signifies a crucial moment in the pursuit of justice for the victims of one of the most devastating attacks on a worship site in Nigeria’s recent history.
“The judgment delivered by the court on June 3, 2026, represents a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice and accountability,” Arogundade said.
While acknowledging that no legal decision could restore lost lives or alleviate the pain of survivors and families, the Bishop emphasized the importance of the ruling, stating, “This judgment affirms an important principle: that human life is sacred, and those who commit acts of terror against innocent people must be held accountable under the law.”
Arogundade commended the judiciary for its thorough handling of the case and praised security agencies, investigators, and prosecutors for their efforts in securing justice for the victims.
He remarked that the court’s decision offers some solace to grieving families and underscores that their suffering has not been overlooked.
Nevertheless, the Bishop cautioned against conflating justice with revenge, urging Christians to adhere to values of truth, mercy, peace, and reconciliation.
Arogundade assured affected families that the Diocese remains committed to supporting them through various initiatives, including memorial services, scholarship programs, empowerment projects, and pastoral care.
As the fourth anniversary of the tragic event approaches, Arogundade reiterated calls for government, security agencies, community leaders, and citizens to remain vigilant in safeguarding lives and protecting places of worship across the nation.
