SpaceX Rocket Segment Believed to Have Crashed Into Moon

A segment of a SpaceX rocket that has been floating in space since last year is believed to have crashed into the moon at high speed on Wednesday. While the event was not visible to the naked eye, experts monitoring the situation with telescopes are expected to confirm the impact.

NASA has indicated that the event poses no threat to Earth but is anticipated to create a new crater on the lunar surface.

Timing and Location of Impact

The rocket piece was expected to strike the moon around 2:35 a.m. ET (06:35 GMT) at an estimated speed of 5,400 mph (8,690 km/h). Preliminary analysis suggests it impacted near the Einstein Crater, located on the moon’s western limb, an area challenging to observe from Earth. Weighing 4 metric tons (4,000 kg), the fragment is likely to have kicked up a plume of lunar dust visible in sunlight, although difficult to detect from Earth.

SpaceX has characterized the crash as unintentional.

Origin of the Rocket Segment

The debris originates from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, a reusable vehicle employed for various space missions. The rocket comprises two segments: an upper and a lower part. While the lower section is designed to return to Earth, the upper segment remained in space after completing its mission tasks.

Safety Considerations for Earth

“There is no danger to Earth,” stated NASA spokesperson Jimi Russell. He noted that NASA plans to track the booster for training and scientific purposes, which includes observations of the impact site.

Mission Details

The Falcon 9 rocket launched from Florida in January, carrying two lunar landers. The booster successfully returned to Earth, while the upper segment remained in orbit to assist the landers. Unlike typical missions, which allow the second stage to return to Earth, this mission required additional thrust, resulting in it floating aimlessly among existing space debris.

According to the Natural History Museum in the United Kingdom, thousands of objects have been launched into space since the 1950s. When these objects cease functioning or fracture, they typically remain in orbit rather than descending immediately.

Trajectory and Control

Earlier this year, astronomers determined that the uncontrolled rocket section was on a trajectory leading to the moon after it dumped its remaining fuel. Julianna Scheiman, director of NASA science missions at SpaceX, explained that while they usually perform maneuvers to ensure safety, solar activity and gravitational forces diverted the rocket’s path.

Concerns About Space Debris

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding human-made debris in space. The European Space Agency reported over 46,000 pieces of space debris weighing a total of 17,000 tons currently in orbit. Eloise Marais, an atmospheric chemist at University College London, has pointed out potential environmental impacts, including the release of chemicals during rocket launches that deplete the ozone layer.

NASA and SpaceX are discussing preventive measures for future lunar impacts, especially as NASA prepares to establish a sustained human presence on the moon as part of the Artemis program.

Frequency of Lunar Impacts

Impacts on the moon from space debris are uncommon. The moon frequently endures strikes from meteoroids, while collisions with artificial objects are less frequent. A Chinese rocket segment crashed into the moon in March 2022, and NASA has conducted deliberate crashes to study lunar conditions.

Anticipated Observations

Experts, including Scheiman, express excitement about the scientific observations that may follow the impact. Bill Gray, an astronomy software creator, noted that while the incident does not pose a direct threat, it underscores the need for improved management of space debris. As NASA aims for a sustained lunar presence, understanding the implications of debris in lunar orbit will become increasingly vital.
