SSANU gives FG 14-day ultimatum over unpaid arrears

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding the completion of arrears payments linked to the 2026 agreement. Failure to meet this demand could result in an indefinite strike.

SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim made the announcement at a press briefing in Abuja, where he outlined resolutions from the union’s National Executive Council meeting held over the weekend at the Federal University in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Ibrahim expressed concern that, despite the clear guidelines in the 2026 agreement intended to address ongoing issues for union members, the implementation of arrears payments has been inconsistent across universities. He criticized the government for what he described as haphazard payments and warned that the union will no longer tolerate further delays.

This ultimatum comes in response to a prior warning issued by SSANU last Thursday regarding ongoing delays in the execution of the agreement. The union emphasized that it would reject “unnecessary delays, selective implementation, marginalization, or any attempts to undermine both the financial and non-financial components of the agreement.”

While Ibrahim noted that implementation has started in some universities, he highlighted that challenges related to funding and administration have hindered progress in others. He reiterated the importance of ensuring that the agreement yields tangible benefits for members.

“Agreements and NEC resolutions must translate into concrete action and measurable benefits for our members,” Ibrahim stated.

To strengthen compliance efforts, Ibrahim directed branches and zones nationwide to monitor the implementation closely, maintain accurate membership records, document non-compliance or victimization cases, and provide timely reports to the National Secretariat.
