Tansian University sets up panel to probe VC’s death one day after swearing in

Tansian University in Anambra State has established a five-member investigative committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the death of its newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Carter Nnamdi Dike Umeoduagu. Umeoduagu passed away on Saturday, just a day after taking office.
Umeoduagu had been serving as acting Vice-Chancellor for two months while the former Vice-Chancellor was on medical leave. Controversy arose when the former Vice-Chancellor returned and claimed that his tenure had been extended until 2030, despite officially ending on September 30, 2026. The university’s Governing Council formally appointed Umeoduagu to the position on Friday.
Sources indicate that Umeoduagu fell ill shortly after the swearing-in ceremony and died Saturday morning. In response to his death, the Board of Trustees and Management of Tansian University announced the formation of the investigative committee during a board meeting on Monday, chaired by Very Rev. Fr. Prof. E.S.C. Obiorah (SAN).
The committee has been tasked with submitting an action plan within 48 hours, which will include recommendations on the university’s involvement in funeral arrangements and its response to an anticipated autopsy report. Obiorah described Umeoduagu as a “hero and a fine scholar” who significantly contributed to the university’s growth. He expressed concerns about potential negligence related to the circumstances of Umeoduagu’s death, emphasizing the importance of the autopsy in determining the cause.
The university has pledged to support Umeoduagu’s family in their decision to authorize an autopsy. The academic community at Tansian University is in mourning, with the Board of Trustees, Governing Council, Management, Senate, staff, and students describing the loss as profound. Umeoduagu was recognized for his vibrant academic contributions and commitment to enhancing the university’s educational standards.
In honor of Umeoduagu, Tansian University has declared a two-week mourning period. Academic activities are suspended, and the university flag will fly at half-mast throughout this time. The university has appealed to the public and media to respect the privacy of the bereaved family by avoiding speculation or the dissemination of unverified information regarding his death.
Prof. Umeoduagu’s impact on the university and the broader Nigerian academic community will be remembered as part of Tansian University’s institutional legacy.
