They’ve robbed me of peace – Chimamanda Adichie accuses Euracare of obstructing inquest over son’s death

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Accuses Lagos Hospital of Obstructing Coroner’s Inquest into Son’s Death

LAGOS — Prominent author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has publicly accused Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital of obstructing a coroner’s inquest into the death of her son, alleging negligence in his medical care and efforts to cover up the circumstances surrounding his passing.

In a statement posted on Facebook Saturday, Adichie expressed her decision to go public following what she described as repeated delays and legal maneuvers by the hospital to thwart the inquest.

The hospital initially pursued a judicial inquest in January, which Adichie claims was an attempt to address “rumors of negligence.” However, she alleges that the hospital later stalled the process and sought to impede it through court actions.

Adichie stated that there were inconsistencies in the hospital’s documentation regarding the cause of death. Initially reported as complications from sedation during a medical procedure, the death certificate later attributed the cause to meningitis, a claim she disputes.

Moreover, Adichie contended that hospital officials acknowledged errors soon after the incident and promised to provide medical records and staff reports—documents she claims were either delayed, incomplete, or never delivered.

According to her statement, efforts by her legal team to obtain full medical records faced resistance, and the documents eventually received were insufficient in detail.

Adichie added that the ongoing legal and administrative battles have compounded her family’s grief and infringed on their privacy. She emphasized the urgency of the inquest to clarify the circumstances surrounding her son’s death.

“I wake up every single morning with my heart racing. Did this really happen? My precious son, Nkanu Nnamdi… The ultimate and utter loneliness of grief is that only you can know the true depth of your despair,” Adichie wrote. “I long for, at least, peace to mourn, but Euracare Hospital has robbed me even of that.”

In her statement, she noted, “I have decided to make this letter public because to keep silent about Euracare’s actions is to enable it.” Adichie expressed a desire not to target individuals personally, mentioning that she had removed some names for clarity.

The hospital has not publicly responded to Adichie’s accusations as of this report.
