Things are going wrong in Nigeria, we must be careful — Ex-Chief of Naval Staff, Omatsola

Former Naval Chief Urges Strengthening of National Unity and Security
Former Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Dan Preston Omatsola (Retired) has raised alarms about Nigeria’s current challenges, emphasizing the need for immediate actions to reinforce discipline, national unity, and security.
Speaking at the 70th anniversary celebration of the Nigerian Navy hosted by NNS Delta, Omatsola reflected on the critical role of the Armed Forces in maintaining the nation’s integrity and stability.
He asserted that the Armed Forces are essential to Nigeria’s unity, cautioning against underestimating the importance of security institutions. “The Navy and the Armed Forces, based on my experiences, are the keystone to Nigeria’s unity,” he stated.
Omatsola expressed his worries about the worsening state of affairs in the country, declaring, “Things are going very wrong in the country. If we are not careful, it will be worse.” He urged military and paramilitary agencies to remain steadfast in their constitutional duties, noting that rising insecurity has led to increased calls for a stronger security presence in communities.
The retired naval chief attributed many of Nigeria’s challenges to a deterioration in discipline, arguing that discipline is foundational to effective leadership and nation-building. “Discipline has always been missing. If I am not disciplined, I cannot discipline my family,” he said.
He cautioned against creating policies driven by fear, arguing that decisions made in panic often fail to solve underlying societal issues. “You cannot do anything through fear. If you make any law through fear, the law will not hold,” he added.
Omatsola called on Nigerians to adopt discipline, patriotism, and a sense of collective responsibility to help protect the nation’s unity and curb further security decline.
The Nigerian Navy is currently celebrating its 70th anniversary with a series of events highlighting its contributions to national security, maritime safety, and the defense of Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
