Tinubu courageous leadership, vision transforming Nigeria through infrastructure – Wike

FCT Minister Highlights Leadership Role in Infrastructure Development
PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria — Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and vision in addressing Nigeria’s developmental challenges during a lecture at the University of Port Harcourt on Saturday.
Wike, speaking at the university’s 36th Convocation Ceremony, emphasized Tinubu’s initiatives as vital steps toward narrowing the country’s infrastructure gap. In his address titled “Leadership and Infrastructure Development in Nigeria: Lessons for Future Leaders,” Wike underscored the significance of ongoing infrastructure projects as a testament to effective governance.
“President Tinubu has shown a remarkable willingness to make tough decisions and allocate resources to combat Nigeria’s infrastructure deficit,” Wike remarked. He described the current period as an opportunity for transformative leadership that could reconcile the nation’s potential with its past performance.
The minister cited various infrastructure initiatives, including significant road projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road, illustrating the administration’s commitment to reshaping Nigeria’s economic framework. He noted that while some projects originated from past governments, the Tinubu administration has injected urgency and strategic focus into their development.
Wike highlighted investments in rail transportation and ongoing power sector enhancements, including the Presidential Power Initiative in collaboration with Siemens, which are aimed at improving electricity supply and consumer trust.
He praised the administration’s energy transition agenda, including the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Initiative and the National Hydrogen Policy, as effective responses to global energy trends. Wike also highlighted investments in housing, aviation, and education, including the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which broadens access to higher education.
Discussing the removal of the fuel subsidy, Wike called it a bold decision that has afforded various government levels the financial flexibility to invest in crucial infrastructure. “Transformative leadership often requires the courage to choose long-term stability over short-term comfort,” he stated.
He cautioned that Nigeria’s developmental goals will remain out of reach without sustained infrastructure investments in areas like healthcare and education. While acknowledging that the benefits of such developments may take time to materialize, Wike encouraged public support for building an integrated economy.
“To achieve lasting national outcomes, we require continuity in leadership and a firm commitment,” he added.
The convocation lecture was part of a ceremony attended by academics, students, alumni, and government officials, underscoring the importance of education in fostering national development.
