Tinubu has my respect; I’ll never abuse him — Peter Obi
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), emphasized respect for President Bola Tinubu during remarks made at the 2026 All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Enugu. Speaking on Friday, Obi asserted that while he may criticize government policies, he would refrain from personal attacks against Tinubu or any other political figures.
The conference, themed “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive,” provided a platform for Obi to address pressing issues, including the contentious debt situation in Anambra State and the importance of accountability among public officials.
Obi underscored the need for political discourse to center on policy and performance rather than devolving into personal invective. “I cannot abuse any governor. I cannot abuse anybody in government,” he stated, noting that he respects Tinubu’s role as the nation’s leader. “I’ve never abused anybody. Who has seen me calling President Tinubu’s name? Never! I will not do that. He’s the President of the country; he has all my respect,” Obi remarked.
Despite his stance on respect, Obi argued that accountability must remain a priority, insisting that citizens and the media have the right to challenge political decisions and performance. “But I can argue on other issues, whether you’re doing well or not doing the right thing. That is allowed,” he added.
The former Anambra State governor also urged media professionals to hold politicians accountable based on their actions and qualifications, asserting that the character and conduct of leaders shape societal values. “We must, because the leadership… the character and behavior of the leader exemplifies the value of the society. And the leader must live it,” Obi concluded.
