Benin U-17 Women’s Team Aims for Historic World Cup Qualification

LOME, Togo — Benin’s U-17 women’s football team is striving for a first-time qualification for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, according to head coach Idah Azonsou.

Following a strong showing in their recent match, the Young Amazons narrowly lost 3-2 to Nigeria at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne last weekend. The second leg of their final round qualifying fixture is set to take place Saturday at the Stade de Kégué in Lomé, Togo.

Azonsou expressed confidence in his team’s potential, acknowledging the challenge posed by Nigeria, a recognized powerhouse in women’s football.

“We know Nigeria is one of the powerhouses of women’s football, so it will be a very difficult match. But we also want to qualify for our first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup,” Azonsou said in an interview with BENIN TV (SRTB).

The upcoming match marks a critical opportunity for the Young Amazons to secure a place in the prestigious tournament.
