WAEC Releases 2026 Computer-Based WASSCE Results
LAGOS — The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) announced the results for the 2026 Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates on Wednesday.
Dr. Amos Josiah Dangut, the Head of WAEC Nigeria National Office, revealed that 1,200,514 candidates, approximately 61.54%, achieved credits in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. This marks a 1.42% decline from the previous year’s results.
In total, 1,959,668 candidates from 24,207 schools registered for the exam across Nigeria, the Benin Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, and Equatorial Guinea, with 1,950,726 candidates actually sitting for the examination.
“Among those who participated, 1,200,514 candidates—61.54%—passed in the key subjects of English and Mathematics,” Dangut stated. “Additionally, 1,687,378 candidates, or 86.50%, obtained credits in at least five subjects, regardless of performance in English and Mathematics.”
Of the candidates who passed in the essential subjects, 558,883 were male, comprising 28.65% of the total, while 641,631, or 32.89%, were female. Furthermore, a total of 953,459 males (48.88%) and 997,267 females (51.12%) participated in the examination.
Dangut also noted that 1,834,695 candidates, or 94.05%, received fully processed results, while the results of 116,031 candidates (5.95%) remain under processing.
Among the registered candidates, 1,213 had special needs, including 137 visually impaired individuals, 491 with hearing impairments, 55 classified as spastic or mentally challenged, and 41 who are physically challenged.
WAEC withheld the results of 167,486 candidates, representing 8.59% of the total, due to examination malpractice. This figure reflects a 1.11% decrease from the 9.7% reported in 2025.
“The increasing use of cell phones in exam halls, despite a ban, and organized cheating in some schools remain persistent challenges,” Dangut added. He also mentioned that several supervisors and invigilators found complicit in malpractice have been apprehended and will face disciplinary actions from the State Ministries of Education.
This briefing marked Dangut’s third and final report as Head of WAEC Nigeria. He highlighted that this year’s examination represented the second instance of conducting the Computer-Based WASSCE for school candidates.
