‘We paid millions’ – Families of rescued abducted NYSC members speak
Families of the 20 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members recently rescued from abduction in Imo State have revealed they paid significant ransoms prior to being informed of their release.
Relatives of the victims shared their experiences with News Central Television, indicating that some families paid as much as 3 million naira, while others reportedly contributed up to 6 million naira.
On Wednesday, a joint operation involving the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the police led to the rescue of the corps members, along with another hostage.
One mother, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted her struggle to secure the ransom. “I paid as much as 3 million naira while anxiously hoping for my child’s safety. I rushed to raise the money, which I ultimately delivered to someone in Imo State,” she said.
Another father, who also spoke to News Central Television, revealed that he had to gather 6 million naira for his son’s release. “We met in Ibadan, Oyo State, to pool our resources. Some even converted their funds into dollars to send to Imo State for the ransom pick-up,” he stated.
While relieved by his son’s safe return, he expressed concern about repaying the money he borrowed. “I’m just a farmer. How will I repay the 6 million naira?” he lamented.
