Nigerian Singer Fave Discusses Challenges Facing Female Artists in Music Industry

In a recent interview on the Afropolitan podcast, singer Chidozie Godsfavour Ugochinyere, widely known as Fave, expressed her concerns regarding the hurdles faced by female artists in the Nigerian music industry. According to Fave, success for women in the industry is often influenced by factors beyond their musical talent.

Fave asserted that female artists frequently experience judgment based on their sex appeal rather than solely on their artistic abilities. She noted that the assessment of a woman’s success often prioritizes appearance and fashion over musical talent.

“It is harder for female artists to break through,” Fave stated. “They are measured by what they wear rather than their music. If your tummy isn’t flat… it is never really about the music; it is more about people’s sexual desires or their fantasies about you.”

The singer pointed out that male counterparts do not face the same scrutiny regarding appearance. “When it comes to men, they aren’t held to that same standard,” she said.

Despite these challenges, Fave maintained that female artists excel in their performances, often surpassing their male counterparts in the industry.
