2027: Anxiety as Shettima awaits Tinubu’s decision on running mate

Shettima Awaits Tinubu’s Decision on 2027 Running Mate

President Bola Tinubu has secured the All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination for the 2027 presidential election without opposition within the party. Unlike in 2022, when he faced significant competitors, including then-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, this cycle has seen a consolidation of support for Tinubu.

With the nomination in hand, attention now turns to his choice for a running mate. Will he retain Vice President Kashim Shettima, or consider a different candidate?

In the lead-up to the 2023 election, Tinubu’s selection of Shettima drew some criticism, primarily rooted in the nation’s complex religious dynamics. Both Tinubu and Shettima are Muslims, raising concerns about the implications of a same-faith ticket amidst ongoing debates about religious representation in Nigerian politics.

Despite earlier dissent, political analysts suggest Tinubu is likely to run with Shettima again in 2027. They highlight Shettima’s loyalty and ability to effectively interpret and support the policies of the Tinubu administration as key attributes. His political acumen has earned him the trust of the President, who understands the importance of maintaining party unity.

The anticipated hesitation regarding a same-faith ticket has diminished, especially given the prominence of First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, a Christian and pastor in the Redeemed Church. Her influence complicates allegations of religious bias within the administration.

As a seasoned political strategist, Tinubu is wary of making a decision that could undermine his support base. Shettima’s political weight in northern Nigeria and his strong following may play a crucial role in ensuring electoral success.

Moreover, the collaborative relationship between the First Lady and Hajia Nana Shettima, the Vice President’s wife, may further solidify their political bond. Both women are actively involved in the Renewed Hope Initiative, which focuses on uplifting women and girls.

While speculation regarding potential changes continues, the prevailing sentiment suggests that it would be unexpected for Tinubu to part ways with Shettima as they approach the 2027 election.

In politics, however, surprises are always possible.
