Labour Party Official Calls Atiku Abubakar Only Serious Contender for 2027 Election
Abayomi Arabambi, the National Vice President for the Labour Party in the South-West, has declared former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the sole serious challenger to President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 presidential election.
Arabambi made his remarks during a Thursday interview on TVC’s Politics Tonight, where he evaluated the current political landscape as the election approaches. He stated that Atiku remains the only candidate prepared to compete with the current president.
“We have a sitting president, and we have only one contender against him. The only contender I know who is serious enough to challenge the incumbent is Alhaji Atiku Abubakar,” Arabambi said.
In contrast, Arabambi dismissed the likelihood of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), entering the 2027 race. He characterized Obi as a political figure more inclined to comment on national matters than to seek office.
“When you look at Peter Obi, you can see that he is essentially a chief content creator,” he remarked. Arabambi further criticized Obi’s reliance on statistics during his discussions of national issues, claiming that many of the figures cited by Obi have been proven inaccurate.
“He presents various statistics that, upon review, are found to be false,” Arabambi said.
He suggested that Obi is not preparing to run for the presidency in 2027, asserting that leaders within the opposition movement are aware of this. “He’s not contesting; even their leader knows that Obi is not contesting. I want everyone to remember what I said today,” he added.
Arabambi also touched on the topic of presidential zoning ahead of the 2027 elections. He emphasized that the presidency is currently zoned to the South and argued that the region should be permitted to complete its eight-year tenure before power shifts to another region.
“Right now, the presidency has been zoned to the South,” he said. He recalled that Atiku ran for president in the 2023 election after the conclusion of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year term but did not succeed.
“In 2023, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar stated his intention to run after the eight years of former President Muhammadu Buhari, but Nigerians decided to support Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In my view, the South needs to complete its eight years,” Arabambi concluded.
