ABUJA — In preparation for the 2027 Presidential elections, the Social Democratic Party (SDP), under the leadership of Shehu Gabam, has selected Abimbola Akeem Atanda as its presidential candidate. The decision was made during the party’s National Convention and Presidential Primary on Wednesday at the Bola Tinubu Conference Centre.
Delegates from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory participated in the selection process, which was conducted through a voice vote.
In a significant shift, the SDP also suspended its National Working Committee led by Prof. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe, along with National Secretary Dr. Olu Agunloye and National Publicity Secretary Araba Rufus Aiyenigba.
The suspensions extended to several other party members, including Adewole Adebayo, Joseph Achile Abu, and Maggie Mariam Batubo, among others. The party cited actions by these individuals as inconsistent with its principles and constitutional guidelines, indicating that their behavior jeopardized party unity and discipline.
“Disciplinary measures were necessary to uphold the ideals of the party,” Gabam stated during the convention. “I therefore urge this distinguished body to approve and ratify the suspensions accordingly.”
The convention also confirmed Shehu Gabam’s position as National Chairman, alongside the other members of the National Working Committee.
