ABUJA — Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, former chairman of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG), has officially declared his candidacy for the presidency under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the upcoming 2027 election. He joins a competitive field that already includes prominent candidates such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi.

Hayatu-Deen’s announcement underscores the ADC’s emerging significance as a platform for opposition figures as the 2027 election approaches. The party faces a crucial test of unity, which may determine its viability in the contested election.

In a statement, Hayatu-Deen expressed that his decision was motivated by the escalating challenges facing Nigerians and the urgent need for experienced leadership to navigate the country’s difficulties.

“This is not the Nigeria we deserve,” he stated. “It is time to change course, and that is why I am stepping forward to seek the ADC presidential ticket.”

He emphasized the financial struggles many Nigerians encounter daily, noting the continual rise in food and petrol prices. “For many Nigerians, just getting through the day has become a struggle,” he lamented.

On security concerns, Hayatu-Deen highlighted a troubling trend in national priorities, asserting that more resources are spent on ransoms than on adequately equipping security forces, while the naira continues to decline against other African currencies.

He criticized the growing disconnect between the government and the populace, arguing that the response to the country’s mounting issues has been insufficient. “For too long, this government has looked away while Nigerians bear the burden of bad policies and rising insecurity. We cannot continue like this,” he stated.

Positioning himself as a steady alternative, Hayatu-Deen outlined his focus on stabilizing the economy, restoring security, and rebuilding public trust in institutions, leveraging over four decades of experience.

“Nigeria needs a calm and steady leader, someone who understands how to fix systems, create jobs, and secure lives and livelihoods. That is the leadership I offer,” he said.

He also emphasized that the ADC’s prospects in 2027 would largely depend on the party’s ability to maintain unity as the election approaches. “Our strength lies in our unity. Nigerians are looking for a credible alternative, and the ADC must rise to that moment,” he remarked.

In his call for collective action, he added, “Together, we can offer a real path forward, one that secures our country, grows our economy, and restores hope to our people. Join me. Let us build a Nigeria that works again, for everyone.”

Hayatu-Deen’s entry into the race is expected to heighten the competition within the ADC, as the party navigates rising public expectations and the challenge of maintaining cohesion ahead of a pivotal election period.
