2027: Makinde vows one-term presidency, challenges Tinubu on fuel prices

By Luminous Jannamike

Presidential candidate Seyi Makinde of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has committed to serving a single four-year term if elected in 2027. During a town hall meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, he detailed plans for a transitional government of national unity and challenged President Bola Tinubu to disclose the Federal Government’s petroleum pricing template.

Makinde emphasized the need for Nigerians to understand the factors influencing fuel prices and asserted that the current administration has not fulfilled significant promises, particularly regarding electricity supply and alternative fuel policies.

“We need to relieve Nigerians from economic hardship,” Makinde said, urging the government to be transparent about its petroleum pricing. He argued that expertise in addressing Nigeria’s challenges is not limited to those currently in power.

“The fact that you are in government or the Presidential Villa does not make you the only Nigerians with sense,” he said, affirming that many citizens have the capacity to analyze issues and propose solutions.

He criticized the government’s initiatives on compressed natural gas (CNG), electric vehicles, and the naira-for-crude policy, which he claimed have not produced the desired outcomes. Makinde also referenced Tinubu’s earlier commitment to rectifying electricity problems within four years.

Looking toward the 2027 election, Makinde vowed to move away from what he termed the “politics of deception,” promising transparency about the nation’s challenges.

“2027 will mark the end of the politics of lies and deceit,” he said. “It is a time when we will all come together to establish a reset agenda and tell Nigerians the whole truth.”

Addressing concerns about the concentration of political power among northern stakeholders, Makinde promised an inclusive administration that would represent the diverse interests of the country.

“I stand before you today to tell you that the government you will put in place from May 29, 2027, will be a transitional government of national unity. Our government will not last beyond four years,” he stated.

He noted that the party has postponed the release of its manifesto to gather input from stakeholders before finalizing its policy proposals.

In support of Makinde, APM National Leader and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed asserted that the party has emerged as a significant force in the opposition, citing its governors, elected officials, and expanding membership.

“Whoever does not reckon with us is going to do so at his or her peril,” Mohammed said, encouraging supporters to back the party’s presidential campaign.

He affirmed APM’s commitment to national unity, mutual respect, and equal opportunities for all Nigerians, regardless of their backgrounds.

The party’s vice-presidential candidate, Lawal Daura, emphasized the necessity for a fundamental reset in Nigeria, identifying APM as a platform for citizens determined to change the country’s trajectory.

“Otherwise, we will continue to be in motion but without movement,” Daura said.
