2027 Presidency: Peter Obi picks Kwankwaso as running mate

Peter Obi Selects Kwankwaso as Running Mate for 2027 Presidential Race
By Emmanuel Okogba
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has officially named former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.
Obi made the announcement on Saturday, shortly after securing the party’s nomination during the NDC’s presidential primary. This move marks a significant step following the recent departure of both Obi and Kwankwaso from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where internal disagreements and ongoing legal disputes prompted their exit.
The Obi-Kwankwaso ticket is anticipated to reshape the electoral landscape for the upcoming presidential race, uniting two prominent opposition figures with substantial support in diverse regions of Nigeria. Obi is well-regarded among younger voters and holds considerable influence in the South-East and parts of the South-South. Meanwhile, Kwankwaso continues to wield significant political power in Kano State and other areas of Northern Nigeria, bolstered by a broad political network.
Leaders within the NDC expressed confidence that this alliance would enhance the party’s prospects in the 2027 elections, characterizing the partnership as a strategic combination designed to attract widespread national support.
Further details regarding the party’s campaign strategy are anticipated in the coming months as preparations for the presidential elections intensify.
