NDC’s Vice-Presidential Candidate Confirms Agreement on Presidential Term Limits
Rabiu Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), confirmed that he and the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have established a formal agreement stipulating that Obi will serve a single four-year term if elected in 2027.
Kwankwaso made this disclosure during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday. He addressed inquiries regarding Obi’s repeated assurances of a one-term presidency.
“I personally believe him, and I have no reason to doubt his commitment to that pledge,” Kwankwaso said. “I don’t think he will change his mind when the time comes.”
He emphasized that the arrangement extends beyond verbal commitments, as it has been documented in writing. “We are all gentlemen, and we have taken the step to formalize our agreement. We have created one document for the party and another for us,” he explained.
When asked for specifics regarding the agreement, Kwankwaso indicated that it includes a provision for power to shift back to northern Nigeria following Obi’s four-year term. “The agreement states that after four years, we will unite as a group—friends and brothers—to ensure that power returns to the North after his term from 2027 to 2031,” he added.
Obi has consistently asserted that he does not need two terms to tackle Nigeria’s challenges, claiming that four years is sufficient to enact his proposed reforms.
