Nigerian Musician Y.K. Ajao Passes Away
Yekini Kolawole Ajao, a prominent Nigerian juju musician widely known as Y.K. Ajao, has died. News of his passing was announced through a statement on the Instagram account of fellow musician Shina Peters on Friday night.
“It’s still hard to believe. You weren’t just a friend; you were my brother. Prof. Y.K. Ajao, your sound, your spirit, your presence—unforgettable,” Peters wrote in the tribute. “Thank you for everything. I will carry the memories always. Rest well, my brother. Your legacy lives on, your music lives on, and you will never be forgotten.”
Ajao embarked on his professional music career in 1973, when he established his own group, ‘Y.K. Ajao & His Professional Brothers Band.’ While he began within the traditional juju genre, he later developed a unique style known as ‘Juju Makossa.’
The music community mourns the loss of a creatively influential figure whose contributions will be remembered for generations.
