Former Kano Governor Shekarau dumps PDP

Former Kano Governor Shekarau Resigns from PDP, Expected to Join APC
KANO, Nigeria — Ibrahim Shekarau, the former governor of Kano State, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), indicating a likely shift to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). His resignation was announced on Sunday amid visible support for APC, including campaign posters adorning his residence on Mundubawa Avenue in Kano.
In a formal letter dated April 19, Shekarau notified the PDP leadership of his departure. The letter was submitted to the chairman of the Giginyu Ward in the Nassarawa Local Government Area, with additional copies sent to the state and local PDP chairmen.
“Please accept this letter as notice of my resignation from my position as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, effective today,” Shekarau wrote.
The decision follows discussions within Shekarau’s political group, known as the Shura committee, suggesting that the move was a collective choice rather than an individual one. He noted, “This decision follows wide and extensive deliberations within my political group to pursue our political career in a different political party.”
In his letter, Shekarau expressed gratitude to the leadership at the ward level and offered prayers for their continued guidance.
This development follows an invitation from APC National Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda for Shekarau and fellow PDP member Bello Hayatu to join the ruling party, an invitation that Shekarau has now effectively accepted through his resignation.
Shekarau, who previously served two consecutive terms as governor from 2003 to 2011 under the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party, has experienced a notable political journey, transitioning through various party affiliations. His departure marks another setback for the PDP, which has seen a growing number of key members leave in anticipation of the 2027 general elections.
