Nigeria cleric, Egbaji regains freedom after two years in detention; FG commended

Bamidele Kehinde Thanks Nigerian Government for Pastor’s Release

Bamidele Kehinde, Director of Dynamic Ambassadors for Social Orientation Initiatives and the City Transformation Project, has expressed gratitude to the Federal Government of Nigeria for securing the release of Pastor Benjamin Egbaji. Pastor Egbaji had been detained in the Republic of Benin for over two years under reportedly harsh conditions.

Pastor Egbaji, a Nigerian cleric, endured significant mental strain and was reportedly held in chains during his captivity. His release was facilitated by a presidential pardon issued by the government of Benin Republic, led by President Patrice Talon.

In a recent appearance on News Central TV, Dr. Kehinde praised the diplomatic efforts that contributed to the pastor’s freedom, acknowledging the lengthy and challenging nature of the process. He noted that progress intensified following the appointment of Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

Dr. Kehinde emphasized that the minister, despite lacking a personal connection or financial incentives, engaged with authorities in Benin through diplomatic channels. Her actions, including an on-site visit and strategic negotiations, were crucial in securing Pastor Egbaji’s release.

He expressed his appreciation for the minister’s dedication and resilience in the pursuit of justice for the detained cleric. Dr. Kehinde also extended thanks to various individuals and organizations that played a role in the advocacy and diplomatic efforts, including Moses Eyo, Dickson Umu Unung, the Government of Cross River State, retired CP Alobi Lawrence, Joseph Bisong Ayi, Blessing Harrison, Eze Sampson, and Rt. Hon. Legor Idagbo.

Dr. Kehinde underscored the collective impact of these stakeholders in achieving the pastor’s liberation. He also noted that while Pastor Egbaji’s release represents a significant milestone, the cleric now faces the task of rebuilding his life after enduring years of hardship. He stressed the need for ongoing support—both moral and material—to assist Pastor Egbaji in reintegrating into society.

Kehinde urged sustained government efforts to protect Nigerian citizens abroad, enhance diplomatic relations throughout West Africa, and ensure that individuals like Pastor Egbaji receive necessary assistance for their recovery.
