2027: Criminalize fake AI-generated content — Haruspice tells Nigerian

Abdullahi Haruna Haruspice Urges Nigerian Government to Combat AI-Generated Misinformation Ahead of 2027 Elections

Abuja, Nigeria — Abdullahi Haruna Haruspice, a journalist and civil society advocate, has called for the Nigerian government to take decisive action against the proliferation of fake content generated by artificial intelligence (AI) in light of the upcoming 2027 general elections.

Speaking at a briefing on Wednesday, Haruspice expressed serious concerns about what he termed the alarming misuse of AI tools to target political leaders and private citizens in Nigeria. He urged federal authorities and security agencies to prioritize the issue by criminalizing the production and dissemination of such deceptive content.

Haruspice suggested that AI-generated misinformation, particularly when used for blackmail, should be recognized as a national security threat and classified as a form of cyber-terrorism. “What was once considered science fiction has now become a credible and immediate threat to Nigeria’s democratic stability, especially as the nation approaches the 2027 general elections,” he stated.

His remarks come amid a growing controversy involving Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who has faced calls for resignation following an alleged partisan message posted on X. INEC has since released a statement labeling the message as fabricated and false.

Haruspice’s appeal highlights the urgent need for regulatory measures to tackle the challenges posed by rapidly advancing AI technologies in the political landscape of Nigeria.
