Nigerian Army Arrests Three Suspects, Recovers Cattle in Plateau State

Riyom, Plateau State — Troops from the Nigerian Army have arrested three individuals suspected of belonging to the Berom militia and recovered 84 stolen cattle following an attack on Fulani pastoralists in the area.

The operation, part of “Operation Enduring Peace,” unfolded on April 22, when soldiers from Sector 6, stationed in Dokku, responded to reports of cattle rustling near the Makera market around 5:00 p.m. Security sources indicated that the troops initiated a search and rescue operation, tracking the stolen livestock to a riverine location.

All 84 cattle were retrieved and returned to their rightful owner. The three suspects, believed to be connected to the incident, are currently in military custody for further investigation.

This arrest comes amid escalating concerns over cattle rustling and livestock-related violence that have heightened tensions across various communities in Plateau State. Areas such as Barkin Ladi, Bokkos, Mangu, and Riyom have reported persistent incidents of livestock theft and attacks on pastoralists, contributing to a protracted crisis in the region.

Security analysts warn that such criminal activities often lead to cycles of violence, complicating ongoing peace efforts in the state.
