India denounces ‘hellhole’ remark shared by Trump | Donald Trump News

India Criticizes Trump’s Reposting of Radio Host’s ‘Hellhole’ Remark About Country

April 24, 2026

India’s Foreign Ministry has condemned comments made by U.S. radio host Michael Savage, which were shared by President Donald Trump on Thursday. The remarks referred to India as a “hellhole” and have been described by Indian officials as “uninformed” and inappropriate.

Trump did not originate the comment but reposted it on his Truth Social account without additional commentary. Savage’s statement criticized U.S. birthright citizenship, saying, “A baby here becomes an instant citizen, and then they bring the entire family in from China or India or some other hellhole on the planet.”

In response, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that Savage’s remarks do not accurately reflect the enduring relationship between the U.S. and India, which has traditionally been defined by mutual respect and shared interests.

The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi responded to the backlash by citing earlier comments from Trump, affirming that he views India as a “great country” and acknowledges the strong ties between the two nations.

India’s main opposition party, the Congress party, has labeled Savage’s statement as “extremely insulting and anti-India,” asserting that it “hurts every Indian.” The party urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the issue directly with President Trump.

Approximately 5.5 million individuals of Indian origin reside in the United States, making Indian Americans one of the largest groups of Asian descent in the country.

Savage’s remarks continued by expressing skepticism about the loyalty of newer immigrant groups compared to earlier European immigrants. In contrast, U.S.-India relations have been characterized by both collaboration and tension, particularly after the imposition of tariffs by the U.S. last year. Recent developments have seen efforts to negotiate a trade agreement aimed at preventing tariff increases and enhancing bilateral trade.

Trump has a history of using derogatory language in discussing foreign nations and immigrant communities. His previous comments have included the infamous reference to several countries as “s**thole countries” during a 2018 discussion on immigration.

China’s Foreign Ministry has yet to comment on the recent controversy.
