Abia takes over power regulation from NERC, warns firms against cheating consumers

The National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has officially transferred its responsibilities in the electricity market of Abia State to the newly established Abia State Electricity Regulation Authority (ASERA). This transition marks a significant shift in the state’s electricity oversight.
On Friday, ASERA issued interim licenses for power distribution and generation to three companies based in Abia State. Emeka Onyegbule, Chairman of ASERA, emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting consumers from unfair practices and facilitating dispute resolution. He urged the licensed companies to adhere to regulatory standards and maintain transparency, warning that non-compliance may lead to penalties.
Iguwo Ukwu, the Executive Director for Legal and Regulation at ASERA, reminded the newly licensed companies of the importance of equitable billing, metering, and customer engagement in accordance with the approved regulatory framework. “You must demonstrate consumer protection and responsiveness,” Ukwu stated.
Ikechukwu Monday, the Abia State Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, represented by Kachu Etolue, Special Adviser to Governor Alex Otti on Energy, called on the companies to provide reliable electricity and build public trust.
The companies awarded licenses include New Era Electricity Distribution, APL Electricity, and Geometric Power Aba.
