You’re unworthy of your office — APC blasts Makinde over ‘Operation Wetie’ remark

APC Condemns Oyo Governor’s Remarks at Opposition Summit

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for his comments made during an opposition summit in Ibadan, labeling his invocation of “Operation Wetie” as an irresponsible incitement to violence.

During a national summit of All Opposition Political Party Leaders on Saturday, Makinde warned of a troubling consolidation of legislative power within a single party. He stated, “For those that are carrying on as if there’s no tomorrow, they should remember that ‘Operation Wetie’ started from here. This is the same Wild Wild West.”

“Operation Wetie,” derived from a Yoruba phrase meaning “wet him,” refers to violent political strife that marked Nigeria’s western region in the mid-1960s. This turmoil followed the contested 1965 western region elections, during which opposition members faced arson and violence.

In response to Makinde’s remarks, the APC issued a statement on Sunday, expressing concern that a governor would resort to such inflammatory historical references. National publicity secretary Felix Morka warned that the comments risk igniting “anarchy, murderous rage, and widespread lawlessness.”

“By inciting violence, Makinde has shown himself to be unworthy of the high office of Governor,” the statement declared.

The APC urged security and intelligence agencies to take action, emphasizing that constitutional immunity does not exempt public officials from accountability for statements that threaten national security. The party emphasized, “Makinde must be reminded that constitutional immunity from prosecution is not immunity from accountability for threats or acts against national security.”

The APC dismissed concerns about the emergence of a one-party state, attributing the challenges facing the opposition to its own missteps. The statement specifically criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for failing to foster stability within their parties.

“No individual, however highly placed, should have the power to threaten or endanger the lives and safety of Nigerians or disrupt the country’s established democratic governance under the guise of political commentary,” the APC statement continued.

The party concluded with a reaffirmation of its commitment to democratic processes ahead of the 2027 general elections, asserting that Nigeria’s democratic space remains open and pledged to support President Bola Tinubu’s agenda.
