2027: Count us out of Ibadan opposition summit’s resolutions – NNPP faction

NNPP Distances Itself from Opposition Summit Resolutions
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), led by Dr. Agbo Major, has officially distanced itself from the resolutions made at an opposition political parties’ summit held last Saturday in Ibadan, Oyo State.
At a news conference on Monday in Abuja, Major stated that the NNPP was neither represented nor involved in the coalition gathering. He emphasized that the presence of some expelled party members at the meeting was not an indication of official participation by the NNPP.
“The NNPP, as a registered political party, wishes to categorically distance itself from the recently concluded opposition parties’ summit held in Ibadan,” Major said. “None of the recognized leaders of our party attended that gathering, nor was the party represented in any official capacity.”
Major cautioned the coalition leadership against allowing individuals he characterized as impostors to misuse the party’s name for personal or political gain.
The NNPP leader also provided an update on the party’s electronic membership registration exercise, launched two weeks prior, noting significant progress across the country. Major indicated that the party is currently conducting a comprehensive review of this exercise, involving key stakeholders such as aspirants and regional chairpersons, to enhance efficiency and transparency.
“Our goal remains to build a credible, technology-driven political institution that reflects the aspirations of Nigerians,” he stated.
Additionally, Major announced that the NNPP recently met with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to request the upload of the duly recognized National Working Committee (NWC) on INEC’s official portal, in accordance with existing court rulings.
He warned that non-compliance by INEC with these court orders could lead the party to call for the removal of its chairman in the interest of democracy.
The NNPP faction also expressed concern over what it described as impersonation and misrepresentation related to an alleged letter to INEC from Dr. Ahmed Ajuji, whom they claim is no longer a member of the party.
Major referenced court judgments from various jurisdictions affirming the dismissal of certain former party members, including Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and others associated with the Kwankwassiya group. He reiterated that these judgments are valid and binding, and stated that the party would take legal action against individuals pretending to be members or representatives of the NNPP.
In preparation for the 2027 general elections, the faction has submitted its schedule of activities to INEC and urged the commission to enforce all relevant court rulings promptly.
Major reaffirmed the party’s commitment to internal democracy, rule of law, and credible leadership ahead of the upcoming elections.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the coalition of opposition parties, concluding its summit in Ibadan, expressed intentions to collaborate on presenting a single presidential candidate to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027. A communiqué issued after the meeting stated that the proposed consensus candidate would be mutually agreed upon and supported by all participating opposition parties.
