Datti Baba-Ahmed announces defection from Labour Party to PRP

Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed to Leave Labour Party for Peoples Redemption Party

Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the vice-presidential candidate for the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, announced his decision to leave the party and join the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) effective midnight.

Baba-Ahmed made the announcement Tuesday during an appearance on Channels Television’s political program, Politics Today. He cited internal disagreements and a perceived departure from the Labour Party’s founding ideals as reasons for his departure.

“I am leaving the Labour Party tomorrow,” he stated. “There is more to it. When there was real peace in the Labour Party, it was when they posted back. They redeployed someone with a specific purpose, and because of the antecedent of the individual to make life difficult, particularly for me. What the Labour Party stood for then is no longer what it is today.”

The former vice-presidential candidate confirmed that the PRP would be his next political destination. “PRP is the new destination. PRP is the one with a history. It’s about 75 years old,” he emphasized.

Founded in 1978 by the late Aminu Kano, the PRP is recognized as one of Nigeria’s oldest political movements, known for its progressive ideology.

Baba-Ahmed ran alongside Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in the 2023 election, a campaign that garnered significant support from young voters and challenged the dominance of Nigeria’s two major political parties, though it ultimately did not succeed at the polls.
